Consul General Wendy Lyle Reaches out to High School Students in Wuhan
February 20, 2009: As part of the post’s effort to reach out to high school students and promote secondary school educator exchange programs, Consul General Wendy Lyle visited East Lake Senior High School (grades 9-12), one of model senior high schools in Wuhan City and Hubei Province, nationally renounced for its special programs on ecological protection, web design and performing arts.

CG Lyle was warmly greeted by over 300 students and faculty members in the school auditorium. CG Lyle took the opportunity to talk about the role of the newly established Consulate General in promoting cross-cultural education. CG Lyle highlighted Ms. Hu Yanqun, a teacher of English, who took part in the 2008 ECA/National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute Program, her experiences and the linkages that could be built to sustain the positive impact. CG Lyle entertained students’ questions in English and Chinese to comment on such issues as how to learn English as a second language, techniques in language interpretation, high school study abroad programs, and the pros and cons of being a foreign student in the U.S. As a special welcome for CG Lyle’s visit, over 100 students presented a 30-minute performing arts program showcasing the school’s music, dance and drama programs, and students’ enthusiasm for American musicals, basketball and moonwalk dancing.

Wuhan Education Television was on site to record the visit and took the opportunity to interview CG Lyle. CG Lyle distributed 100 copies of President Obama’s bio and Jiaoliu Magazine during the visit, and invited students to visit U.S. Consulate General Wuhan web sites to stay in touch with ConGen Wuhan activities.
Established in 1964, East Lake Senior High School has 1,800 students and 162 faculty members. For seven consecutive years its students won national awards for academic excellence in China, with a few of them being accepted by performing arts schools in foreign countries.
