CG Lyle Reaches out to China University of Geosciences to Build Closer Ties
April 24, 2009: As part of her university outreach activities, CG Wendy Lyle visited China University of Geosciences in Wuhan to introduce DOS exchange programs and promote closer educational ties between the university and U.S. institutions of higher education. Founded in 1952 as Beijing College of Geology, the university was relocated to Wuhan in 1975 and, in 1986, became one of the first 33 universities in China to have a graduate school. The university has trained over 80,000 scholars, including Primer Wen Jiabao. It has more than 900 faculty members and over 20,000 students, including over 400 international students from 86 countries. One of the leading human rights scholars in China, Tian Shengbing, heads the university’s Institute of Human Rights Law. The university has had collaborative projects with UCLA, Stanford, University of Arizona and Harvard. During her visit, CG Lyle talked about the role of ConGen Wuhan in building university linkages between American and Chinese institutions of higher education and a number of DOS-funded exchange programs. She met the six American teachers teaching at the university. She also succeeded in securing an agreement from the university to host Embassy speakers in May.
