Consul General Lyle and Embassy Officers Reach out to Universities in Jiangxi
April 27-28, 2009: Consul General Wendy Lyle teamed up with Embassy officers Margaret Hsiang and Brooke Spelman for outreach activities at Nanchang University and Jiujiang University. At both universities, CG Lyle introduced the roles of the newly established Consulate and VPP Nanchang in building university linkages and promoting mutual understanding via educational and cultural programming.

At Nanchang University, the U.S. delegation was warmly welcomed by a team of faculty members and an American teacher led by Deputy Party Secretary Xu Qiuzhen. CG Lyle took the opportunity to share the good news that Professor Xiang Xinin of the English Department has been awarded a 2009 Study of the U.S. Summer Institute grant as recommended by the Consulate to prepare her to teach a new course on “Religious Pluralism in the U.S.” Established in 1940, Nanchang University has five campuses with over 80,000 students. The university has active collaborative programs with Germany, France, Japan, UK, New Zealand, and Thailand. Its U.S. partners include the Universities of Ohio and Tennessee. The university is developing joint programs with the Universities of Michigan, Minnesota and Georgia. At Jiujiang University, the U.S. delegation was greeted by Deputy Party Secretary and President Gan Xiaoqing and a team of faculty members and American teachers. Established in 1901 and expanded in 2002, the university has over 36,000 students, including over 160 foreign students from the U.S., Japan and India. The university runs collaborative program with universities in more than 10 countries, including the U.S., France, U.K., Germany, Russia, Japan, Ireland and India. Both universities thanked the Consulate for all the support granted, including donating books on the U.S. to its library, sending Embassy speaker Amy Chang Lee to their respective law schools for a lecture in October 2008, and connecting the university with American institutions of higher education.
