Western Hubei Women Leaders Push Hard for Gender Studies and Equal Rights
June 18, 2009: Consul General Lyle visited Yichang Women’s Federation as part of her outreach activities to western Hubei. Consul General Lyle talked to the group about the U.S. public diplomacy programs on women’s issues and encouraged the women leaders to reach out to their counterparts in the U.S.

Led by a dynamic leader, Shang Kui, and her team of senior managers, Yichang Women’s Federation is recognized as one of the most active women’s organizations in China. The federation of 2 million women in Yichang runs over 1,800 sub-groups in rural villages and urban areas with strong support from the local government and enterprises. It organizes workshops on legal aid, child care, gender education and domestic violence. It also helps minority women set up handicrafts shops and organizes contests and exhibitions to create jobs for female workers. Director Shang Kui visited the U.S. in 2006 and looks forward to renew her ties with her U.S. counterparts through the help of the U.S. Consulate General in Wuhan
