Universities in Western Hubei Reach out to U.S. Partners
June 18-22, 2009: As part of her public outreach activities to western Hubei, Consul General Lyle visited Three Gorges University in Yichang on June 18 and Yangtze University in Jingzhou on June 22. On both occasions, Consul General Lyle met with university management to better understand the university’s U.S. linkages and offered ideas on how to cultivate closer ties with U.S. institutions of higher education.

Consul General Lyle held substantive dialogue with university presidents and vice presidents and took the opportunity to introduce a number of U.S. academic and cultural exchanges programs and provided insights on how to apply for some of the U.S. academic programs online.

Three Gorges University, which has 20,000 students and over 1,400 teachers, set up an Institute of American Culture and Education Studies in 2007 and started exchanges of professors and students with the University of Texas in Dallas in December 2007. Yangtze University has over 40,000 students and over 1,800 teachers, including 18 American teachers. It runs collaborative programs with multiple universities in 26 countries, including New York State University.

At both universities, Consul General Lyle held roundtable discussions with enthusiastic professors and students and addressed such issues as cross cultural communication, civic education, the role of the US Consulate General in Wuhan, and the current status of bilateral relations, as both nations celebrate the 30 anniversary of the normalization of the relationship. Consul General Lyle also took the opportunity to distribute DVDs and books published by the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Section.
