National Science Foundation China Director Visits Wuhan University
July 7, 2009: U.S. National Science Foundation Beijing Office Director Alexander DeAngelis visited Wuhan to attend a number of workshops. Consul General Wendy Lyle teamed up with him to visit Wuhan University’s Science and Technology Department to explore potential collaborative projects between U.S. research institutions and Wuhan University. Consul General Lyle and Mr. DeAngelis were warmly greeted by Vice President Jiang Changzhong, Deputy Foreign Affairs Director Wang Jing, and a team of faculty members of the Science and Technology Department.

During the four-hour session, three Wuhan University scientists presented findings of their recent research projects. In response to questions from Wuhan University participants, Mr. DeAngelis introduced the grant programs funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, while Consul General Lyle talked about the establishment of the new diplomatic post and its role in promoting academic exchange programs. Wuhan University professors were eager to work with potential U.S. researchers to apply for the NSF grants and lobbied the Consulate for its support in securing multiple-entry visas to expedite their travel between the U.S. and China to carry out the joint research projects.
