Consul General Lyle Engage Chinese Leaders in Northern Hubei
July 8, 2009: As part of her outreach activities, Consul General Wendy Lyle visited Xiangfan and Shiyan, two cities of growing importance in northern Hubei, to engage local leaders and promote closer ties between central China and the U.S. In both cities, Consul General Lyle was warmly greeted by senior local officials and carried out a series of outreach activities to engage cultural, educational and commercial leaders and students. Consul General Lyle took the opportunity to encourage an array of collaborative projects and distribute DOS publications and US Info DVDs, and advertise Wuhan English and Chinese web sites.

During her visit to Xiangfan, Consul General Lyle was enthusiastically greeted by Deputy Mayor Yang Xuchun and Deputy Mayor Li Shuyong in Xiangfan and met with senior officials in charge of foreign affairs, trade and investment promotion, and the overseas friendship association. With a population of 5.8 million, Xiangfan is one of the 20 major production areas in China for commodity grain and nicknamed “City of Textile” for its well-developed textile industry. Xiangfan houses an important production center of Dongfeng Motor Corporation, which produces heavy diesel engines and automobiles. With more than 180 manufacturers of car components, Xiangfan is an important production center for car components in China.

Consul General introduced a series of outreach programs sponsored by the Consulate General and offered to support closer ties between Xiangfan and the U.S. Xiangfan is establishing sister-city relationships with Indianapolis and Raleigh. Consul General Lyle was invited to meet with the Raleigh representatives, who were in Xiangfan to discuss collaborative project. With its strong interest in the auto industry, Xiangfan is also reaching out to Detroit to lobby for joint projects.
