ConGen Wuhan Builds Sustainable Rule of Law Program
August 21, 2009: Consul General Wendy Lyle met with a team of law professors, led by Professor Zhang Wanhong, from Wuhan University Law School’s Public Interest and Development Law Institute, to congratulate their joint effort with the Consulate General to win a grant to explain and illustrate the American legal system using Hollywood films about legal cases. Inspired by the method used by the visiting 2008 Fulbright scholar Alan Lepp, Deputy Senior Staff Attorney of US Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit in Chicago, the project, entitled “Understanding the U.S. Legal System through Hollywood Films,” will help Wuhan University Law School build a collection of 100 U.S. legal films, and set up a university loan program for law professors across China to screen Hollywood legal films and hold discussions with law school students, community legal clinic advocates, and migrant workers, in hopes of better understanding the American legal system.

As another effort of the Consulate General’s strong endorsement for rule-of-law programming, the dean of the law school at the South Central University of Economics and Law, and the Vice Dean of Hunan’s Xiangtan University Law School, received grants to visit the U.S. in January 2010 to better understand U.S. legal issues and engage American legal specialists.
