Embassy Minister Counselor Thomas Skipper Visits Jingzhou Media Group
September 22, 2009: Tapping the close relationship that Consul General Lyle has established with Jingzhou TV and Jingzhou News.com, Embassy Minister Counselor for Public Affairs Thomas Skipper visited Jingzhou Media Group to get first-hand information on the impact of its products and the sophistication of the group’s news-gathering techniques.

The delegation was warmly greeted by Director Li Haichang and Deputy Director Ding Xiaoping of the media group, as well as the director of Jingzhou Municipal Broadcasting Bureau. The delegation toured the studios and facilities, and met with reporters and producers, who are eager to learn more about U.S. broadcasting, produce programs on American life and society, and seek opportunities to take part in short–term training and internship programs in the U.S.

Jingzhou TV has proposed working with the U.S. Department of State’s Public Affairs Bureau to produce a series of prime-time TV spots highlighting U.S. museums’ efforts to preserve Chinese antiquities. The station is also interested in producing programs to introduce U.S. education and U.S. farming techniques.

Minister Counselor Skipper appeared in one of the most popular programs on agricultural issues. The U.S. delegation’s visit to Jingzhou was covered extensively by Jingzhou TV during its 7 pm and 10 pm news reports, and the interview with Mr. Skipper was aired in a popular news magazine on September 22.
