Consulate General Wuhan’s First English Speech Contest Sparks Keen Interest in English-learning and Leadership Training
September 24, 2009: The first English speech contest sponsored by the Consulate was held on September 24. A total of 18 contestants from eight universities in three provinces in the Wuhan Consular District competed before a full house. Each contestant had three minutes to do a speech and/or dramatic reading on self-selected topics related to the U.S. They were judged on pronunciation, grammar, intonation, fluency and originality. There were six winners, but all 18 contestants received certificates, small tokens of appreciation and a great deal of encouragement. Six U.S. and Chinese government officials and educators served as judges: Consul General Wendy Lyle, Embassy Regional English Language Officer Damon Anderson, Deputy Principal of Wuhan Yangtze International School Herb Mittler, Deputy Section Chief of Hubei Foreign Affairs Office’s American Affairs Section Li Yonghong, Wuhan Foreign Affairs Office American Desk Officer Weng Yungen, and Hubei Educational Bureau's International Program Director Huang Nianping. Over 100 participants attended the event, including many professors from local universities who were on site to cheer for their students.
