The Boys and Girls Choir of Harlem Alumni Ensemble Engages Wuhan Audiences

October 22, 2009: As part of its first five-city tour to China, 14 members of the Boys and Girls Choir of Harlem Alumni Ensemble performed in the grand Qintai Concert Hall in Wuhan to a full house of over 1,600 attendees and a standing ovation. The choir connected with the Wuhan audience through passion for music and mutual desire to reach out to each other. Their improvisation, spontaneity and artistic expression of the songs transformed the audience and sparked the entire hall. The choir members expressed their strong desire to return to Wuhan, and music lovers in Wuhan want them to come back! To highlight cultural interaction, Chinese-American Er-hu Master Ben Sun performed Chinese compositions to welcome the visiting choir members. The event was covered by Wuhan TV and reported by print media on October 23.

The event was organized and sponsored by US Embassy Beijing and US Consulate General Wuhan in collaboration with a number of local business and cultural institutions. The Boys and Girls Choir of Harlem Alumni Ensemble is composed of former members of the Boys Choir of Harlem and the Girls Choir of Harlem. The Alumni Ensemble had been invited to perform at the Shanghai International Arts Festival. The U.S. Embassy in Beijing and the U.S. Consulate Generals in Shanghai, Wuhan and Shenyang arranged to bring them to a greater variety of Chinese audiences by extending their tour to Hefei, Wuhan, Xian and Harbin.

The concert was the first visit to Wuhan by the Boys and Girls Choir of Harlem Alumni Ensemble. It was also the first cultural performance organized by the US Consulate General Wuhan since its establishment on November 20, 2008. It was the first time a concert was sponsored jointly by the US government and a number of Wuhan collaborators. The concert demonstrates successful partnership between the peoples of China and the United States. It helped build mutual understanding and respect, as both countries celebrated the 30th anniversary of the bilateral relations.
