State Alumni Grant Project “Media and Social Responsibilities” Kicks off at Wuhan University
October 28, 2009: Over 150 journalism students attended the opening session of the State Alumni Grant Project on “Media and Social Responsibilities,” co-sponsored by Wuhan University School of Journalism and Communication and the U.S. Consulate General Wuhan. The goal of the project is to build a “State Alumni in China” network to focusing on journalism, and to enhance both the teaching of American journalism at Wuhan University and promote academic cooperation among State Alumni. Six Chinese State Alumni who are either journalism professors or working journalists will serve as featured speakers. Li Jun, Guangzhou TV’s Legal Advisor and a 2004 IVLP, opened the series with an excellent and insightful lecture on “Mass Media: Operational Risks and Legal Procedure,” using, as examples, two legal cases he handled for Guangzhou TV. Consul General Lyle made remarks at the opening ceremony and shared her perspectives on media issues drawing from her own journalistic background. She also helped engage students in a q-and-a session after Mr. Li’s lecture. Future lectures will involve State Alumni to discuss the role of the media in championing rule of law and NGO concerns.
