Consul General in Wuhan
CG Sovereign is pleased and honored to take office on November 30, 2009 as the second American Consul General of Wuhan.
Ms. Sovereign arrived in China in the summer of 2005 and has served in a variety of posts at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing from 2005 to 2009. From 2005 to 2006, Ms. Sovereign served in the Consular Section and became well-versed in U.S. visa procedures and policies. From 2006-2007 she served as a Political Officer, covering U.S. and China’s external relationships, including issues related to the Six-Party Talks aimed at denuclearizing the North Korean Peninsula. From 2007 to 2008, Ms. Sovereign was a press officer and Deputy Spokesperson for U.S. Embassy Beijing and was in charge of the Embassy’s relationship with print media, both foreign and Chinese. From 2008 to the summer of 2009, she took the opportunity to study Chinese full-time at the U.S. Embassy’s language program based in Beijing. She finished her year of language training in time to return to Embassy Beijing to assist with the visit of President Obama to China in November 2009. After four years in Beijing, the depth and variety of her experiences in various sections of the Embassy have prepared her well to take office in Wuhan and promote U.S. –China relations on a broad range of issues.
CG Sovereign’s previous tours include her work at the US mission to NATO in Brussels, Belgium as a Political Officer where she worked on NATO and U.S. relations with Balkan countries, including issues concerning NATO peace-keepers in Kosovo. She also served in Mosul, Iraq in 2004 as part of the Coalition Provisional Authority.
Prior to joining the Foreign Service, CG Sovereign was an attorney in California for six years, working as a labor and employment lawyer in the San Francisco office of a major national U.S. law firm. She graduated with a B.A. in International Relations from Pomona College in Claremont, CA and attended law school at University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. She speaks Chinese, French, and Spanish.
CG Sovereign comes to Wuhan with her two-year old daughter, and looks forward to getting to know the people and places of Hubei Province.
